The throttle valve limits the flow of air to the engine. Its degree of opening is determined by turning the throttle grip. The more it is opened the more air can flow in. Some throttle slides have air pockets on the upper side and cut-off sections (so-called "inserts") on the lower side. These add additional air to the gasoline mix and make it leaner as a result. Slides with a flat bottom do not add additional air and are therefore ideal for compensating for a leaner midrange. In order to be able to comply with the required emission values for the new PX, the SI carburetors that are currently available are equipped with a throttle valve with two additional air pockets. This smoothes out the mix in such a way that partial load pinking and piston jams can occur on tuned engines. The solution to this problem is to replace the throttle valve which is equipped with a thicker butterfly valve without air pockets (for example part no. 84.920.400 ).
Bottom Line: Throttle valves are often overlooked when tuning a carburetor and are the icing on the cake in SI tuning.
SIP -TIP: Order the carburetor gasket (e.g. part no 9206000) at the same time.
