A spring-loaded float needle is the modern successor to the springless version and can replace it 1:1. The spring serves to protect the rubber tip from excessive pressure and to cushion the float from excessively strong impacts, e.g. from bumps, like a shock absorber. On many seemingly non-adjustable engines, simply installing a spring-loaded float needle helps to fine-tune it. The additional buffer makes the float level much more stable, regardless of engine vibrations.
TRIANGULAR OR SQUARE?
Dell'orto uses as a rough distinction two different shapes of floating needle types; triangular and square. The square type is available in two different sizes: 4.5 mm and 5.2 mm
Triangular: Dell'Orto SHB, PHVA, PHBN, PHBG, FHBB, UB, MA18, MB A 20-24
Square 4.5 mm: Dell'Orto SI20, SI24/24E, SI26/26, SH, PHBH, PHBL, VHB, MA BS5/BS7, MB B20-24
Square 5.2mm: Dell'Orto SI24/24H, SI26/26H, VHSA,VHSB
TIP: For a perfect result, if necessary, clean the float needle seat in the carburetor. To do this, insert a cotton ball into the float needle hole and rotate it back and forth while applying light pressure. To clean the entire carburetor, you can use brake cleaner.
KNOWLEDGE: The most common reason for a faulty float needle is wear/aging of the rubber sealing tip. For this reason, the float needle is made of durable Viton®.
