The "CLASSIC" version of the ignition is virtually indistinguishable from the original and blends seamlessly into the look of the historic technology. It combines VAPE ignition parts with original-look cast aluminum parts made by SIP .
What characterizes the "CLASSIC"?
Compared to other versions of the SIP Performance by Vape ignition, the SIP Performance CLASSIC version features a cast fan and stator. The fan's surface is very similar to that of an original fan, bringing the engine's appearance closer to the classic look of the original.
All technical ignition components, such as the flywheel, ignition/light coils, electronic control unit, voltage regulator or rectifier, as well as small parts, are all original VAPE.
If you prefer an even more original look, you can opt for voltage regulators and electronic control units where the corresponding technology has been installed in original optical housings. However, these are not manufactured by VAPE.
The Ignition for restoration and tuning on the road
The street version has static ignition timing (like the original). The ignition provides a high electrical output of 110W even at low revs (light). Additional consumers are reliably powered (fuel pump, lambda sensor heater, USB port, SIP rev counter, etc.). The pickup on the base plate is arranged in two parts, one behind the other, instead of side by side, as is the case with the original PIAGGIO. As a result, this ignition is insensitive to lateral misalignment. The exact ignition timing is marked on the flywheel and on the base plate with a precise line. This allows the ignition to be set without flashing the strobe light.
Now things get interesting: AC or DC?
The SIP Classic Ignition is available in DC and AC versions.
AC: The most common variant is the AC version for all battery-free models. In this case, the alternating current generated by the alternator is simply limited and stabilized by a voltage regulator.
DC: If you want to connect a SIP speedometer and other digital devices, as well as a high battery charging current, you should choose the direct current (DC) version. When using the DC variant, the alternator current is used entirely to charge the battery. From there, the vehicle's electrical system is supplied with a stable and powerful voltage, regardless of whether the engine is running or not.
Note: When using the DC variant in combination with the SIP tachometer, you must either use the KOSO signal filter for speed detection or connect the brown wire of the SIP tachometer to the white wire of the SIP / VAPE ECU! The ignition pulse for the tachometer must be set to 1 for DC and 6 for AC.
Note 2: When installing a SIP Classic DC ignition on all PX models with a combined ignition/steering lock (i.e., typically Lusso models and later), some special features must be observed: These battery-powered models have DC and AC circuits installed as standard in the on-board electrical system. The high and low beams are powered by AC, which is switched via an output on the ignition switch.
The original Piaggio regulator can be retained on models equipped with the standard 5-wire stator. It's a little more complicated for models equipped with a standard 7-wire stator. In this case, you'll need to convert the on-board power supply and regulator from the standard 5-wire version.
Conclusion: The Classic ignition is the entry-level SIP Performance ignition, ideal for restorations. The ignition spark is always reliably generated. The power available for the light is always sufficient.
