The Malossi range for Vespa offers highly technological products capable of developing performance increases so exceptional compared to the standard that they also require the adaptation of other fundamental components of the vehicle.
It is enough to compare a Vespa PX 200 E produced in 1978, which as standard develops a power of 12.35 HP at 5700 RPM, with a Vespa “tuned” with Malossi kits, which can develop 27.5 HP at 8000 RPM, or more than double the HP at an extremely higher rotation speed, to understand that it was absolutely essential to design a clutch unit capable of resisting the stresses due to an increase in performance of such proportions!
Malossi POWER UP CLUTCH SYSTEM clutch units were created to provide an answer and overcome all the problems that inevitably arise when the clutch unit technology is not adequate for the other engine components. A traditional clutch, having to transmit more than double the power to the gears, while simultaneously having to rotate much faster, can lead to failure of the bell under the effect of centrifugal force, to sliding and deformations that translate into annoying and not very reassuring metallic noises, up to the classic clutch slipping caused by insufficient friction developed by the original discs, which prevents, among other things, the transmission of the entire power released by the thermal unit, partially nullifying its potential.
The two versions of the Malossi POWER UP CLUTCH SYSTEM have common characteristics:
- POWER UP CLUTCH BASKET clutch bell made of high-strength steel with surface hardening treatment to increase wear resistance and, consequently, durability.
- Reinforcement ring welded with TIG technique on the external diameter of the bell to effectively counteract the centrifugal force developed by the higher rotation speed.
- 4 clutch discs with high-performance friction material.
- Recalculated and tightened fit tolerances, especially in the spring pressure plate-bell connection, to eliminate annoying metallic rattling and help increase component life.
The two clutches are operated by a series of high-coefficient main springs, 6 in the bell for the PX 125 - 150 and 7 in the bell for the PX 200 E , and are supplied with a set of auxiliary springs, again 6 for the PX 125 - 150 and 7 for the PX 200 E , to be used in the higher power configurations. This adjustment allows the user to adapt the clutch to the engine configuration, benefiting from it at all levels of tuning and in all possible set-ups.
