Nowadays car tuners have a wide range of modern retrofit LED headlights to choose from. However, if you want to upgrade your two-wheeler, the choice is significantly reduced. We have managed to assemble a suitable range of LED headlights with various diameters. With a little modification they can be adapted to fit almost all common Vespa and Lambretta models.
The 120mm diameter lens type is in the middle of the sizes we have available in this range and provides an excellent basis for converting and upgrading scooters that have circular headlights, such as Vespa 50/90 SS, Primavera, Super, GS and even some Lambretta models! The smaller 110mm diameter models can be modified to fit the smaller sized fender light (from VM) and Vespa 50 N/L/R headlight housings and boots, even though their original nominal size is only 105mm.
To adapt them to fit the scooter headset, the brackets located on the reflectors must first be removed with an appropriate tool and a suitable type manufactured. There are a wide range of options available to provide a method of holding the new headlight in place. Sometimes the original can be adapted, otherwise a suitable bracket may be available to purchase. Some owners permanently fix the main body of the LED headlights in place with the use of a glue gun, some surround it with an adhesive foam cushion material, others build sophisticated light housing brackets to be fixed firmly in place.
The minimal construction effort involved soon pays off, as the comparative amount of light created by the new LED headlight is worlds apart from the performance of the original types, some still only running on a measly 6V. Another practical advantage is the less power required from the stator plate, the more available it is for other electrical components. AC based electrical systems can cause the LED lights to flicker so conversion to a DC system and/or the inclusion of a battery is recommended.
Conclusion: Be the first in your club to take advantage of the obvious benefits of an LED headlight on your vintage scooter! A high-tech look and increased safety during the darkest hours are undeniable arguments.
