Throttle Valve for SI Carburetors – Optimizing Mixture and Performance
Operation
The throttle valve regulates the airflow to the engine and is controlled directly by the rotation of the throttle grip. The wider the valve is opened, the more air can enter the carburetor.
Types of gas valves
Some gas valves (also known as gate valves ) feature:
- Air pockets on top
- Cuts or inserts on the bottom side
These features introduce additional air into the air/fuel mixture, making it leaner. Conversely, flat-bottom valves do not add additional air and are ideal for compensating for a lean mixture in the mid-range.
Problem on modern SI carburetors
To comply with the emissions regulations of the most recent Vespa PX models, the SI carburettors currently on the market are equipped with throttle valves featuring two additional air pockets .
On tuned engines, this configuration can lead to:
- Excessively lean mixture
- Detonation (pinking) at partial load
- Risk of piston seizure or damage
Solution
The solution consists of replacing the original throttle valve with a thicker one free of air pockets (e.g., SIP item 84.920.400 ). This procedure allows for a more correct and safer mixture to be restored, especially on more powerful engines.
Conclusion
Throttle valves are often overlooked when tuning SI carburetors, but they are the icing on the cake for clean, confident, and well-balanced power delivery.
