Powerful and reliable ignition as an upgrade for classic Vespa models.
SIP has managed to enlist the assistance of a major European manufacturer, VAPE, to produce these high-end ignition systems for our beloved Vespa . Each ignition is the result of extensive development work and the lifeblood of our team. Solutions have even been developed for rare Vespa models. The materials, production, and construction of SIP PERFORMANCE ignition systems are of the highest quality. The laser-cut logo is a good indication of the clean and efficient production of the components in this kit. The advantages of this ignition speak for themselves.
- Strong power supply
- Strong and reliable spark
- Particularly stable flywheel
The electrical functions represent the state of the art in modern technology. Thanks to the eight coils included in the stator plate, enough power is generated even at a certain rpm to fully illuminate the Vespa 's lights.
The extremely stable flywheel
One of the key advances achieved is the production of the flywheel/flywheel unit as a single component, eliminating the need for a riveted internal mounting cone and uneven rotation. This significantly reduces engine vibration and extends the life of the flywheel-side crankshaft bearing. The fan is CNC-machined from solid aluminum and delivers an identical volume of cooling air to the cylinder as the original PIAGGIO PX 125 and PK models, throughout the entire rpm range. The amount delivered by most aftermarket ignition systems is easily exceeded by our design, without impeding higher engine speeds.
The flywheel for small-frame Vespas weighs 1390g and the one for large-frame Vespas weighs 1660g, making them both significantly lighter than their original counterparts. This primarily improves throttle response, while still leaving the engine easily manageable in city traffic and when carrying a passenger. Our SIP -VAPE flywheels are 100% compatible with the original disassembly method.
The two versions of the SIP -Vape ignition: Strada or Sport
The CDI module is available in a "Road" version with a static ignition timing similar to the original, or a "Sport" version with a variable ignition timing that advances at low revs. This increases available torque, especially at low revs, and the ignition timing is gradually retarded as the rpm rises in the power band. This also helps reduce combustion temperature while increasing the rev range. The exact adjustment range is shown in the instructions in the form of a diagram. For example, between 4000 and 8000 rpm, it retards the ignition timing by 8 degrees.
The pickup on the stator plate is split in two and arranged one above the other rather than next to each other as in the original design. This eliminates the possibility of false positioning during initial setup due to the rough manufacturing tolerances included in many Vespa engine cases, crankshafts, stator plates, and flywheels. The exact ignition point is clearly marked with a precise line on both the flywheel and the stator plate, allowing ignition adjustment without a strobe light. Simply locate the top dead center (TDC).
AC or DC?
Both AC and DC versions are available. The most common variant is the AC version for all battery-free models. The DC version is recommended if you want to power digital components such as the SIP speedometer or if you require a high battery charge.
Note: When installing a SIP -Vape DC ignition in all PX models with a combined ignition and steering lock (e.g., typically Lusso models and later), some special features must be observed: These battery-powered models feature both DC and AC circuits from the on-board electrical system as standard. The high and low beams are powered by AC, which is switched via an output on the ignition switch.
Note 2: The original Piaggio regulator can be retained on models equipped with a standard 5-wire stator plate. Things get a little more complicated with models equipped with a 7-wire ignition base plate. In this case, the on-board electrical system and regulator must be converted from the standard 5-wire variant.
Conclusion: The SIP -Vape ignition puts an end to the old Vespa ignition problems: The flywheel is virtually eliminated as a source of error. The spark is always generated reliably. There is always enough power available for the light.
