Why exhaust is essential on 2-stroke engines
While a 4-stroke engine requires complex valves, camshafts, intake and exhaust systems (and sometimes a turbo), a 2-stroke can radically change its character with a properly designed exhaust . The shape of the expansion chamber, designed to work in harmony with the transfer and exhaust ports, not only promotes the evacuation of burned gases but also exploits the pulse effect to optimize the filling of the cylinder with fresh mixture. This is one of the main reasons for the performance efficiency of modern 2-strokes.
Design: a “science” in itself
While the idea may seem simple, creating a truly effective expansion chamber requires experience, calculations, and testing. Manufacturers of excellent exhausts are few and far between, and they often operate on limited production runs, making these components exclusive and typically expensive.
SIP by NORDSPEED
NORDSPEED , based near Bremen (Northern Germany), is considered a benchmark in the production of racing exhausts for Vespa and Lambretta. The systems designed by Tobi Rüßmann for the Vespa Largeframe 200cc models are a true benchmark: in particular, the optimization for the cylinder layout and the limited space around the studs, which can "choke" the transfer ports, is one of its strengths.
The collaboration between SIP and NORDSPEED has given rise to exhausts with a high-performance design, enriched with modern features such as EGT preparation and lambda probe .

Viper Box
The Viper Box represents the pinnacle of big box exhausts. Although it was not designed with the sole objective of absolute maximum power, it stands out for its wide and exploitable range of use within a “comfortable” rev range, with a significant improvement in driveability and effectiveness on the road.
To fully enjoy the performance, attention has also been paid to ground clearance when leaning : the exhaust path is designed to maintain a good lean angle despite the large box and bulky manifold. When riding on mountain passes and narrow roads, the scooter remains manageable and safe; only Vespa models with 8" wheels can get closer to potential contact with the asphalt.
The outlet diameter is slightly increased to reduce the risk of the exhaust overheating . This helps maintain consistent performance over long distances (e.g., highway) and maintains “healthier” temperatures for the engine.

Calibration tips (timing)
The Viper Box performs best when the cylinder timing is matched to its layout. Recommended values:
- Transfer: 130° – 136°
- Exhaust: 190° – 196°
- Blowdown (difference between exhaust and transfer): 30° – 32°
