Along with the cylinder and piston, the crankshaft is the beating heart of any internal combustion engine. It is among the hardest-working components, and converting the piston stroke into a rotary motion places the highest demands on both quality and care during construction. The crankshaft should also be well-balanced to reduce any unwanted vibrations, and oscillating mass should be kept to a minimum to support efficient power delivery. The high-end bearing rotates at the same speed as the engine rpm, receives lubrication from the two-stroke gasoline/diesel mixture, and must withstand two sharp changes in piston direction for each engine revolution. The crankpin, which connects both crankshaft webs to the connecting rod, must be pressed into the webs with a certain distance from the openings in the webs. If this connection is not strong enough, the crankshaft can twist, and the crankshaft webs can become misaligned and seize. To ensure that the main end bearing receives sufficient lubrication, the large end of the connecting rod should be provided with slots to facilitate this.

This brand new range of high-performance crankshafts is manufactured for SIP in Italy and meets all the requirements listed above. We've focused our efforts on providing the highest quality combined with proven technological features. Each crankshaft is specifically balanced to match the stroke, connecting rod length, and scooter model it's intended for.

The crankshafts available in this range can be divided into two main types:

The "Premium" models feature a high-quality "standard" connecting rod, meaning its surface finish remains unchanged. It features lubrication slots and holes for the large and small end bearings, respectively. The "Performance" crankshaft models feature a higher-quality connecting rod and are made more durable with an intensive polishing process that provides a more stable molecular structure. The smooth and polished sides of the connecting rod also help reduce turbulence. The polished connecting rods have also been optimized for weight reduction. They feature a gas-flow profile and have been modified around the large end to improve bearing lubrication.

PX 62mm long stroke crankshaft

The 62 mm stroke provided by this long-stroke crankshaft for 200cc Vespa models is 5 mm more than the original crankshafts. This increases the displacement of the installed cylinder by approximately 8%. The improved stroke-to-bore ratio not only increases power output but also significantly increases torque delivery. The crank is designed to enhance tuned street engines with high torque. The 62 mm stroke does not fit into the original crankcase. To be more precise, it does not fit into the smaller flywheel side of the crankcases. This requires machining to an internal diameter of 99.5 mm.

The disc valve door timings.

125°/-5°: Includes approximately 20° of extended port timing. The longer inlet port timing is ideal for sport-oriented tuning. The port timing remains conservative enough for everyday use. This allows the engine to maintain decent low-end performance and is also relatively easy to tune correctly. Crankcase kickback is also kept at an acceptable level. The valve disc band is specially designed to make gas flow through the crankcase more efficient. Another aspect of crankshaft timing development was to provide more effective balancing and a smoother engine.

The lengths of the connecting rods.

We have these long stroke crankshafts available with the following connecting rod lengths:

105mm: for Vespa largeframe 125-150cc models.

110mm: for Vespa 200cc Largeframe models.

127mm: for QUATTRINI M244/M232.

The extra millimeters of length compared to the QUATTRINI type allow for more satisfying adjustment of the passage times. Two small tungsten inserts are also included to ensure perfect balance.

Conclusion: The ideal crankshaft for delicate and reliable tuning projects. It can enhance a wide range of applications, from a lightly tuned standard setup to a Malossi sports cylinder combined with a big-box exhaust producing a highway-friendly 20 hp.

The best configuration - our SIP - TIP:

Don't forget to also replace all seals and bearings when you replace the crankshaft, (e.g. #M6615466 and #M6617236).

The extra travel must be compensated for with a 2.5mm head gasket (such as #90779500).

The new reinforced woodruff keys (#87059200) are also a good complementary component.

Fitment information: Don't forget to modify the smaller half of the engine cases, this requires machining up to an internal diameter of 99.5mm.
