"Black Edition", style update for the SIP Performance Ignition by VAPE for classic Vespa and Lambretta models.
The SIP Performance by VAPE ignition is the most popular for classic Vespa and Lambretta scooters due to its reliability and performance. Since the fan is clearly visible on many models, the ignition choice also influences the vehicle's style. With the "Black Edition," SIP offers an alternative to the silver fan with its distinctive CNC-machined surface. The black version features a black anodized fan compared to the standard version.

Our team puts a lot of development work and passion into every ignition. The materials, workmanship, and design of the SIP PERFORMANCE ignition are of the highest quality. The electrical operation is state-of-the-art. With eight light coils on the ignition plate, sufficient current is generated to illuminate the vehicle's lights brilliantly even at idle.
The extremely stable flywheel
One of the major advances is the production of the flywheel as a single piece, without individually riveted cones. This virtually eliminates imbalances and over-revving, reduces engine vibration, and minimizes crankshaft bearing wear. The flywheel fans are made of CNC-milled aluminum and match the original fans of the PX125 and PK models in terms of volumetric flow at low and high rpm; the cooling performance of other ignitions is significantly superior, but without slowing down at high rpm. The weight of the fans, including the flywheel, is 1390 g (Smallframe), 1660 g (Largeframe), and 1650 g (Lambretta). These fans are therefore lighter than the original, the engine stalls better on the throttle, but are still comfortable to ride for everyday use and for two-up riding. The original flywheel extractor also fits the SIP - VAPE.
The two versions of the SIP -VAPE Ignition: Street or Sport
The ECU is available in a Road version with static timing (like the original) and a Sport version with variable timing, to achieve greater pre-ignition at low revs. This results in higher torque, especially in the pre-resonance speed range; in the resonance range itself, pre-ignition decreases, combustion is more radiated, and the speed range becomes wider at the top. The exact adjustment range is shown in the instructions in the form of a diagram. Between 4000 and 8000 rpm, for example, the Ignition adjusts by 8 degrees in the retarded direction.
The pickup on the base plate is arranged in two parts, one behind the other, rather than side by side as in the original PIAGGIO. As a result, this ignition is insensitive to lateral misalignment, which occasionally occurs due to manufacturing tolerances in some crankcases, crankshafts, stators, and flywheels. The exact ignition timing is marked by a precise line on the flywheel and the base plate. This allows the ignition to be set without flashing the strobe light. To do this, simply determine the top dead center (TDC), for example with a reversing measurement.
Now things get interesting: AC or DC?
The SIP -VAPE Ignition is available in DC and AC versions.
AC: The most common variant is the AC version for all battery-free models. In this case, the alternating current generated by the alternator is simply limited and stabilized by a voltage regulator.
DC: If you want to connect a SIP speedometer and other digital devices, as well as a high battery charging current, you should choose the direct current (DC) version. When using the DC variant, the alternator current is used entirely to charge the battery. From there, the vehicle's electrical system is supplied with a stable and powerful voltage, regardless of whether the engine is running or not.
Note: When using the DC variant in combination with the SIP tachometer, you must either use the KOSO signal filter for speed detection or connect the brown wire of the SIP tachometer to the white wire of the SIP / VAPE ECU! The ignition pulse for the tachometer must be set to 1 for direct current and 6 for alternating current.
Note 2: When installing a DC-version SIP -Vape ignition on all PX models with a combined ignition/steering lock (i.e., usually Lusso models and later), some special features must be observed: These battery-powered models have DC and AC circuits installed as standard in the on-board electrical system. The high and low beams are powered by AC current, which is switched via an output on the ignition switch.
The original Piaggio regulator can be retained on models equipped as standard with a 5-cable stator.
It's a little more complicated for models equipped with a standard 7-wire stator. In this case, the on-board power supply and regulator must be converted to the standard 5-wire version.
Conclusion: The SIP -Vape ignition puts an end to the old Vespa ignition problems: The flywheel is virtually eliminated as a source of error. The ignition spark is always reliably generated. Adequate current is always available for the light.
